After testing various prototypes, he was inspired by modified Retro Active pickups. He chose a set that combines the best of the 81/60 with the added flexibility of the Retro Active design. Unlike normal open coil pickups, both the bridge and neck pickups use stud poles. The fingerboard pickup has ceramic studs for a clear high - end percussive sound. The bridge pickup, similar to the EMG 81, has black steel poles and a ceramic magnet. Both pickups come with custom Retro Active preamps exclusive to this Root set.
